St. Andrew's Missions in Tanzania and Pine Ridge

St. Andrew's is directly involved in mission work beyond central Iowa by working for improved living conditions and development through our Tanzania Ministry Team and our Pine Ridge service trip.

Pastor Luhwa at Mbukwe Tanzania Ministry

Our companionship with the Hedaru Lutheran Parish in the Pare Diocese in northeastern Tanzania began in early 2005, when we began communicating with the Hedaru Lutheran Parish and planning an initial visit to meet them face to face. In January of 2006, five members of St. Andrew's travelled to Africa to meet them. Our initial visit was very exciting, and have since returned numerous times.

  • We're constantly working on ways to develop personal relationships with the people of Hedaru.
  • Some members of the Tanzania Ministry Team formed an independent nonprofit to tackle larger humanitarian projects in the Kilimanjaro region.  Visit Tanzania Partners !

Pine Ridge

For the past 6 summers, members of the high school youth group and many adult leaders have traveled to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwestern South Dakota for a mission trip. Each year, they are involved with a building project that helps the people of the reservation. They also learn about many of the social and economic problems facing the residents of the reservation. In June 2009 8 youth and 6 adults will be headed back to Pine Ridge to help a family rebuild their home that burnt down this past summer. Our goal is to raise enough money to help cover our trip expenses plus the estimated $15,000 needed to cover the building costs. A couple of our members have made 2 separate trips to Pine Ridge this year already to meet with the family and to see what materials and labor will be needed to complete our task. And although building a home is a large project for our group of 14, we believe the Lord will give us the strength, endurance and perseverance to complete this project. If you would be interested in helping to donate either money or supplies to our project, please contact Kristin Johnson at the church office.

  • Contact Kristin if you'd like more information about the Pine Ridge trip.
