"Armageddon"
The word "Armageddon" literally means "Mount Megiddo" in Hebrew.
a) Megiddo was a famous battlefield at which the "very stars fought from heaven" against Israel's enemies (Judges 5:19-20) Megiddo is the site of Joshua's death (2 Kings 23:29). It would therefore stand to reason that this battle is to take place in Palestine at Mt. Megiddo EXCEPT FOR ONE THING:
Megiddo has no Mountain.
Megiddo is a plain. (Zech
12:10-11)
b) The nearest mountain to Megiddo is Mt. Carel, where Elijah was proven victorious over the Jezebel's false prophets. so does Mt. Megiddo really mean Mt. Carmel? If it did, most of John's readers in Asia Minor would not have understood it because they would not have known the geography of Palestine any better than most of us know the geographical details of Canada. Revelation was intended to be clear to the Christians of the time, but not to non-Christians and to say Mt. Megiddo when he meant Mt. Carmel would not have been clear to them.
c) So what is going on here? Earlier in Rev. John used the name Abaddon (9:11), knowing his readers would know the Hebrew word "abaddon" means "destruction/destroyer ". He is doing the same thing here.
Megiddo in Hebrew means "to cut, attack, or maraud". Mt. Megiddo (Armageddon) would mean Mt. of Attack.
d) Now, since Megiddo has no mountain, since the Kings of the East and of the world are going to war against Rome and since ROME IS THE CITY OF SEVEN HILLS where do you suppose John intended his readers to conclude this battle would take place? ROME ITSELF!
The Pagans will see Rome being invaded by foreign invaders (6th plague) but the Christians will know that these invaders are the two-hundred million demonic horsemen. (6th Trumpet)
